Trust the Lord! Not Singular Statements Not Substantiated by God's Quorums of Prophets- President Dallin H ...

In the first session of General Conference, October 2019, President Dallin H. Oaks of the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints counseled the Saints about putting too much stock in the visions and words of those who are not official spokespersons for the Lord or in the opinion of one perspective of a prophet in a singular statement.

Doctrine is established by the Quorums of the First Presidency and of the Twelve Apostle of the Church. That is how to know it is official Church doctrine. Anything else is an opinion that is not official.

It does not mean the teaching or view may be false, but it should NOT be taught in church as anything more than an opinion until God reveals it to His Quorums as His established words.

Surely, the Lord God doeth nothing save He reveal His secrets unto His servants the prophets [Paraphrase of Amos 3:7].

Understanding Baptism by Immersion

Rodric has been a Mormon Christian since he was 15 years old. He has a lot to say about his religion.

Jesus Christ was Baptized to fulfill all righteousness

A sacred ordinance

Baptism by immersion is a sacred ordinance for many religious groups. This ordinance practiced in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the first step in a dual ordinance to becoming a member. The following step would be confirmation as a member of the church and the giving of the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying-on-of-hands.
Baptism by immersion is the process of completely submerging the candidate under the water after the recitation of a prayer by a ordained priesthood holder with the authorization to perform the ordinance. It is a symbolic and public gesture of a person's willingness to cast off or renounce the old life and accept a new life as a follower of Jesus Christ--being born again.
It is a commandment of Jesus Christ that all members of His Church receive this ordinance with the willingness to take upon them the responsibility of brotherhood and as witnesses of Jesus Christ. The baptismal ordinance washes away the past sins of the candidate symbolically, but is only a portion of a dual ordinance. The act of baptism does not cleanse sins or qualify a person literally for anything. It is Christ who did the cleansing and qualifying. To obtain access to Christ's cleansing one must be baptized because Jesus Christ commands it in 3 Nephi 11:38,
And again I say unto you, ye must repent, and be baptized in my name, and become as a little child, or ye can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God.
The atonement of Jesus Christ, his suffering and death, is what actually pays the price for sin washed away.
The two ordinances baptism and conferring the Holy Ghost are married and must occur together to help to fortify new members of Christ's covenant as a reward for submitting to the requirements of the Lord.

Commandment

The Lord sent His resurrected servant John the Baptist in these the last days before Jesus Christ returns as King of Kings to confer the authority to baptize upon Joseph Smith Jr. and Oliver Cowdery in preparation of His coming.
John said to both men
Upon you my fellow servants, in the name of Messiah I confer the Priesthood of Aaron, which holds the keys of the ministering of angels, and of the gospel of repentance, and of baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; and this shall never be taken again from the earth, until the sons of Levi do offer again an offering unto the Lord in righteousness. Doctrine & Covenants 13:1
The law that Jesus Christ instituted that baptism is an ordinance of necessity moved Him to send the authority anew to do so in these last days.
That authority is had only within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The church invites all followers of Jesus Christ to listen to His words and keep His commandments and testifies that He desires all to partake of baptism by proper authority, priesthood authority. This establishes the importance of keeping all of Christ's commands.

All People Must be Baptized

God provided a plan to cover all the people who died without knowledge of Christ or the opportunity for baptism.Posthumous baptism is the act of one who is living standing in as a representative of a deceased person and submit his or her body to be baptized for and behalf of that person. The act does not make the decease person a member of the church, but provides the opportunity for that deceased person to accept the ordinance and live in the spirit as if he were living in the flesh.
As with baptism for the living, posthumous baptism is only part of a dual ordinance. Willing representatives of deceased brothers and sisters receive all necessary ordinances commanded by Jesus Christ for and in behalf of the dead.
The dead are taught the gospel just as earnestly as the living--having the choice to accept or reject the words. It is not revealed who may have or may not have rejected the teaching to the deceased. It does not matter to the living. The living perform the ordinances anyway giving the deceased the option of accepting it or denying it.
Members of the church attend temples, which are sacred places of worship, to attend to the ordinances for the dead. Baptism is the foundation of the gospel in this life and the next because God's commandments are eternal and do not become void at death.
Posthumous ordinances show the true universal love of God. God will not be mocked. We must receive the ordinances for ourselves here in this life, but for those without such an option a way has been prepared by Jesus Christ to gain access to all that the living have access to.

Introducing the Moroni Saw Me Website

Moroni Saw Me

Moroni is a ancient prophet who  lived on the American continents. There is no indication of his people's origin or evidence where they existed on the Americas generally accepted by believers in his words or according to archeologist. What is important regarding Moroni is that he existed and witnessed a powerful view of the Savior Jesus Christ--adding his testimony to the world as proof that Jesus is a real person with the powers of God at His disposal because He is God.

God showed Moroni the future of the world in connection to the Americas, and all the world. Because of this connect God gave him, included certain writings in his book to give humanity. Those writings are to help change the hearts of people. Moroni helped to change the heart of Rodric Johnson. Read about how.

Moroni Saw Me

The Gall of Bitterness

Another Testament of Jesus Christ

Studying The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ, I read the last sentence in verse Mormon 8:31:.

"But wo unto such, for they are in the gall of bitterness and in the bonds of iniquity."

It speaks about the gall of bitterness and the bonds of iniquity. I understood it to mean that a person in the gall of bitterness is surrounded by it on every side and held back by iniquity. I felt the desire to go forward and explore this option.

The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ is a record of God’s dealings with the inhabitants of ancient America

Reflection

My wife once told me that she was upset that she could not do what she wanted to do and still be a good person in the gospel, or she was angry that God would not allow us to have some sins. I didn't understand when she told me her feelings of frustration at the time, but now it makes sense.
I've felt as she did about the things in life I wanted to do, but felt trapped by my religious beliefs. Some of those things I wanted to do having the thought that it will all be okay in the end as Mormon 8:31 hints that such people do.
Moroni, the Author of this passage that was translated by Joseph Smith, speaks of the coming forth of the record known as The Book of Mormon and the type of environment that will prevail--today's society.
Yea, it [The Book of Momron] shall come in a day when there shall be great pollutions upon the face of the earth; there shall be murders, and robbing, and lying, and deceivings, and whoredoms, and all manner of abominations; when there shall be many who will say, Do this, or do that, and it mattereth not, for the Lord will uphold such at the last day. But wo unto such, for they are in the gall of bitterness and in the bonds of iniquity.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary usage and meaning of gall states it means the bitter yellowish fluid from animals called bile used in medicine. The point is that it, gall, is bitter.
It then listed bitterness of spirit or rancor. The last and most biting listing to me was "brazen boldness coupled with impudent assurance and insolence." I was touched by the final definition.

Conviction

How could I have the audacity to take a commandment of God and say, "Allow me to disobey because I enjoy this sin and it comes naturally to me? Allow it if you love me and want me to be happy because I think the universe should make an exception for me and cater to my wants and desires whether they be good or bad."
I could see the bitterness of spirit in my desire to sin without regard and receive no forgiveness because I thought I was too good to repent. How cocky or impudent is my assurance that I could dare excuse myself of sin just because I like it?

Understanding

Now I know what being in the gall of bitterness means.

If bitterness had gall or its own secretion of bitterness, I would be swimming in those secretions, full of self-righteous contemptuous pride, and thinking to circumvent the commands of God. Jacob, another prophet from The Book of Mormon and centuries before the birth of Jesus Christ, informs, "the keeper of the gate [Entry to Heaven through ordinances of the Gospel of Jesus Christ] is the Holy One of Israel [Jesus]; and He employeth no servant there; and there is none other way save it be by the gate [baptism]; for He cannot be deceived." (2 Nephi 9:41)
I had become one of "many who will say, Do this, or do that, and it mattereth not, for the Lord will uphold such at the last day." Moroni warns "wo unto such, for they are in the gall of bitterness," (Mormon 8:31) or the arrogant contemptuous self-serving posture of pride and malice for the principles meant to help us become like Father in Heaven, "and in the bonds of iniquity," (Mormon 8:32) or a slave to the desires to do wrong without punishment or repentance just because it feels good.

Resolution

I do not desire to be a slave to fleshy pleasure impulses because I think my sins deserve special dispensation and pardon because I'm too weak to trust in Jesus Christ's atonement. I want to step out of the gall of bitternessbe removed from the bonds of the iniquity that holds me fast, and repent of my sins so that I can master them through living the Gospel as taught and lived by Jesus Christ and His authorized servants the prophets. Jesus told Ether, another prophet recorded in The Book of Mormon, "if men come unto Me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and My grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before Me; for if they humble themselves before Me, and have faith in Me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them." (Ether 12:27) I aim to recall all my words written here so that I may recognize when I feel "justified" in sin to pray for forgiveness and strength to master the sin and not allow the sin to master me.
The moral of the story is to do what is right even if what is wrong feels good. With this behavior comes the natural spiritual consequence of inner peace and satisfaction. Inner peace is for all people who truly follow the path of light and goodness, which are universal laws, and universal laws are set by God the Father, executed through God the Son, Jesus Christ, and revealed to humankind by God the Holy Ghost.

Read These Things

Not one of them, the critics, think to call it what it purports itself to be: Another Testament of Jesus Christ! The Book of Mormon is the word of God.

There are people on the web who will endeavor to prove the ancient writings of American prophets are not fit for the world to read! They insist that the book is a work of the imagination of a young boy. When that is disproved they, the critics, insist that the young man, Joseph Smith Junior who translated the plates that became the book stole the story from a contemporary of his in age only, Spalding Manuscript fiasco.

When that is debunked they say he copied pages from the Bible and changed the names. When that is unraveled they call it inspired allegory or an extremely long proverb.

Well, it is true. The book is a wealth of truth.

It is a force for Christ and a powerful teacher of men and women who are humble and willing to KNOW God. Limit yourself with knowing about God if you reject the book. You will never know God as much as you will if you accept all of His words.

And get this. There are more records filled with the word of God other than The Book of Mormon! If you haven't already read and prayed about this book, you are already behind in the Word of GOD revealed to humankind.

You can call me Nothing

Reading in the Book of Mormon for one of my upcoming posts on Hubpages.com for a new article on prayer, I came across a scripture that my Bishop shared with me while in a meeting.

The reference was in Mosiah 4. In this chapter is one of the scripture mastery verse that I was obliged to memorize on my mission in the Cape Town South Africa Mission, Mosiah 4:9-10.

As soon as the Bishop mentioned that chapter the words "Believe in God...." popped in my head along with a rush of memories and emotions about my mission. I was surprised when the bishop moved to verses 4 and 5 instead.

And king Benjamin again opened his mouth and began to speak unto them, saying: My friends and my brethren, my kindred and my people, I would again call your attention, that ye may hear and understand the remainder of my words which I shall speak unto you.
For behold, if the knowledge of the goodness of God at this time has awakened you to a sense of your nothingness, and your worthless and fallen state—
We had been talking about how wonderful the gospel is and how it has blessed our lives and how it is the best thing we had come across and he was not telling me to understand my own nothingness!!!!

As I thought upon it and how much God is everything in my existence because without Him I would not be here! I realized that in comparison to Him I am nothing! I am like a new infant in comparison to its parents.

Infants are here and dependent upon their parents for all things. I am the infant dependent on God for all things until I learn how to be like Him as He promises us through our Savior Jesus Christ.

Which means that I must then remember that all of us, all people, are in  stages of development and should be willing to view each other with forgiving eyes and open hearts as we would view novices like infants.

I am struggling along with each other person to be the best I can in life, so I should judge less and support more as do parents of infants! I love The Book of Mormon. Now go and read chapter four of Mosiah!!!

Mormon: Captain and Leader of Integrity and Honor

Mormon is the name of a man of God who lived hundreds of years ago on one of the American continents. He kept a record that became The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ and the impetus of change for millions for goodness in Christ. This article chronicles part of his life.

Mormon: Among the Spiritually DeadIn the failing moral environment, Mormon describes how he received visitations of the spirit and acknowledgment of heaven to soothe him in his jaded culture.

After terrible battles and loss of life, the warring nations entered a treaty. Following the treaty with the Lamanites, Mormon chronicles that the Nephites had a decade of non-aggression with the Lamanites. During this time of peace, the Nephites had the opportunity to prepare for any future wars with the Lamanites.
Mormon does not focus on such preparations as he gives a reference to it in his record at what is now the beginning of Chapter three in The book of Mormon.

He still heralded the days of Captain Moroni when the preaching of the gospel of Christ was used as a way to prepare the people psychologically for war and hoped heeding the gospel would justify the protection of heaven. What was Mormon's joy when the Lord instructed him during this time to preach the gospel to his brethren!
Mormon presented with great earnest the message of invitation to the Nephites soldiers under his command. God had spoken to Mormon as their prophet and would bring them protection.

Mormon reveals, "I did cry unto this people, but it was in vain; and they did not realize that it was the Lord that had spared them, and granted unto them a chance for repentance. And behold they did harden their hearts against the Lord their God." Mormon 3:20
From the very beginning of the record, Mormon records that if the people who dwelt on the Americas would hearken or heed the God of the Land, who is Jesus Christ, the Lord would protect them from all enemies and prosper them.
The Lord in mercy always calls out and warns His children before destruction. Mormon was the instrument, a general in their very military, God used to call them to repentance!

The only revelations that the people would heed from Mormon would be those related to military strategy. No more did the people consider the religion of their leaders a pertinent source of victory. No more did the people seek prophets to consult for battle. Luckily, the people had Mormon to volunteer for service.

Narrow Neck of Land

The King of the Lamanites, possibly named King Aaron, sent an epistle to the Nephites in 360 A.D. that he planned to attack for war. The nonaggression treaty had expired. It is interesting that Mormon received the letter from King Aaron rather than it being received by a Nephite civilian head of state.
Mormon appears to be the sole head of government left since the beginning of the rebellion. In Alma 51:13-21 Captain Moroni had to send an epistle to the head of state, Pahoran, to gather permission from the people just to compel the King-men to arms against their particular group of Lamanite aggressors.

The civilian form of government among the Nephites ceased to operate officially or at least surrendered to a form of Marshall Law--giving the command of the functions of government to the military.
Whatever position is correct, Mormon received the communique from King Aaron (again assuming that the leader during this time is still Aaron). With the information that Mormon received, he endeavored to provide as much protection to the southern border as possible.
With almost an entire year to prepare for the upcoming attack, Mormon commanded the armies to fortify the land in the borders near the Narrow Neck of Land with headquarters probably in or around the city of Desolation. Mormon intended to keep the Lamanites from gaining any of the lands from the treaty ten years earlier.

Covenant Over Country

Mormon explains that
...it was only the distance of a day and a half’s journey...on the line Bountiful and the land Desolation, from the east to the west sea; and thus the land of Nephi and the land of Zarahemla were nearly surrounded by water, there being a small neck of land between the land northward and the land southward.
Mormon records that the distance to cross the strip of land was a day and a half of walking or by an animal--he did not specify which. Patrolling that length of land would take a small army depending on how the Nephites did it! They did do it, though.
Mormon wanted to hold the Lamanites at that place. With so little ground to cover it was easier to protect and defend that confined space. It is evident that naval warfare was not something the Nephites and Lamanites contrived though surrounded by water. They utilized hand-to-hand combat--maybe slings were used.
Armed with such tools and the confidence to boot, the Nephites prepared under Mormon's lead to defend against the Lamanite invasion. In 361 and 362, A. D. the Lamanites warred with the Nephites and did not conquer them. Each time the Lamanites attacked, the Nephites repelled them! Such success among the Nephites did not lead to gratitude as Mormon recorded, but to pride and self-righteous behavior.
Mormon tolerated many things from his men, but when they forswore themselves of all that that he had vowed not to, Mormon had his fill of wickedness. He complained
...they began to boast in their own strength, and began to swear before the heavens that they would avenge themselves of the blood of their brethren who had been slain by their enemies. And they did swear by the heavens, and also by the throne of God, that they would go up to battle against their enemies, and would cut them off from the face of the land. And it came to pass that I, Mormon, did utterly refuse from this time forth to be a commander and a leader of this people, because of their wickedness and abomination."Mormon 3:9-11
Swearing by heaven and the throne of God pushed Mormon to his career's end as their general because of the depth to which he held his covenant with Jesus Christ to not dishonor those things.
Nephi described the gospel of Jesus Christ as a strait gate, a narrow gate. The only way to get in is through this gate by following the commands of God precisely. In 2 Nephi 31:18-21 , Nephi states that
"this strait and narrow path which leads to eternal life; yea, ye have entered in by the gate; ye have done according to the commandments of the Father and the Son; and ye have received the Holy Ghost, which witnesses of the Father and the Son, unto the fulfilling of the promise which he hath made, that if ye entered in by the way ye should receive...after ye have gotten into this strait and narrow path, ...ye have not come thus far save it were by the word of Christ with unshaken faith in him, relying wholly upon the merits of him who is mighty to save.
...[Y]e must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life... [T]here is none other way nor name given under heaven whereby man can be saved in the kingdom of God...."
The narrow path that Mormon walked could not include the swearing upon sacred things. He retired his general’s regalia at the Narrow Neck of Land. It was a symbolic statement. The defeat of the Lamanites occurred at the Narrow Neck and the way became too narrow for the soldiers under Mormon's command--or should I say the path became too broad for Mormon to allow further insult to injury.
As general, Mormon decided to draw a line and not accept every type of behavior thrown at him. If he could not garner the respect of his men enough to cease defiling deity, he would leave them to their own designs--he would try to anyway.

The Significance of Desolation in the Book of Mormon Heritage

Notice the importance of Desolation to the Nephites as Mormon recorded it in the Book of Mormon. Desolation has received many mentions in the book. At first glance, the reader might disregard the significance of the word at all.
Desolation is the name of a land as stated before in conjunction with the city which headed the passage into the Northern lands then occupied by the Nephite nation. The land of Desolation received its appellation from the Mulekites, another group of people besides the ancestors of the Nephites who journeyed to the ancient Americas before the captivity of Judah by Babylon.
This group of people thus named the land because of the number of human skeletal remains that they found upon the land and the lack of trees in the land upon arriving there following their journey.
It follows that the land south of Desolation was called Bountiful because of its bounty of animals and game among other things. Desolation existed as its name denotes--because of a great ecological purging and destruction in the land Northward.
Mormon highlights the noteworthy voyages of:
Hagoth, he being an exceedingly curious man, therefore he went forth and built him an exceedingly large ship, on the borders of the land Bountiful, by the land Desolation, and launched it forth into the west sea, by the narrow neck which led into the land northward. Alma 63:5
Desolation is the land Northward but throughout the record, Mormon refers to it depending on circumstance. In fact, it seems that Mormon does much to keep from naming the incidental places by calling places the "land of Zarahemla" rather than specify a suburb of the city proper.

He does this when referring to the birthplace of his coming Lord Jesus by writing at Jerusalem rather than mentioning the suburb Bethlehem when copying out the speech Alma gave at a city called Gideon. God would have revealed to Nephi that city when considering all the other things he revealed to the man!
Also, Lachoneous, the chief judge during the seven-year-siege (though it did not last that long), used the land of Desolation as a line of demarcation on the north and Zarahemla on the south to wait out the Gadianton robbers who afflicted both Nephites and Lamanites the years 19 to 22 A. D.
Having to use the border of the Land of Desolation as the holding point again takes on significance for the Nephites. This time, however, the Nephites would be on the northern side of the border instead of the southern.

This time, the people would be in the part that was actually Desolation. This time, the land would describe their souls as well as their location because they refused to heed the counsel of God through Mormon.

Mormon Returns

"I, Mormon," says that august historian, "do not desire to harrow up the souls of men in casting before them such an awful scene of blood and carnage as was laid before mine eyes...therefore I write a small abridgment, daring not to give a full account of the things which I have seen, because of the commandment which I have received, and also that ye might not have too great sorrow because of the wickedness of this people." Mormon 5:8-9
The time was terrible for the general. They had lost many cities. Before he took leadership again, the Lamanites had taken the wives of the defeated and sacrificed them to idols.

The first group of dissenters who purposely taught their children different beliefs than those of Jesus achieved their goal to separate themselves spiritually and culturally from the Nephites evidenced in that terrific act of debauchery.
Never did Mormon mention that the Nephites stopped believing the traditions of their parents were true. Mormon did say that they would rather die than follow the teachings of Jesus Christ as prescribed by the now dead church. It was not the gospel that failed, but the people who made up the church who failed. These people rejected Jesus Christ cursing the heavens as they died.
Mormon prayed yet still for those people but without faith. He had no hope of their salvation as a nation. Many even started to desert to the other side, though if they were found out death soon would follow.

I hope that I have demonstrated how Christ is the center of all the pages, even the history of this great book, The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ.

I enjoy reading them repeatedly as Chris offers some compelling insight into the lives of those ancient people. Though his works are fiction, they are fun to read. Check out his site Frost Cave.

Men Called Nephi

Prophets Are People

The Lord is very careful of whom he chooses as his prophets, but he gives each one the chance to prove that he can live up to the potential that is expected of all of Heavenly Father’s children. Prophets are not different from other people.
They have faults and challenges to face, sins of which to repent and sorrows to overcome. Often times we think of prophets as some extra special beings, and they are—but aren’t we all?
How, you might ask. Well it is simple. God gives us each responsibilities that He knows that we are capable to do. It is like the servants and the talents. In Matthew 25:14-29, the Lord Jesus speaks of talents given to three servants. Each one was given a different amount of talents to increase.
Now, I don’t want to focus on the story so much as the amount of talents that the servants were given. The Lord knows each of us, and he accordingly gives us the trials that will help us grow. I may be a one-talent trial person and the Lord expects me to take that one talent trial and increase it by overcoming it and showing that I am now at two talents in strength for overcoming it.
You may be a three-talent trial person who can increase it to six talents in strength, spiritual strength for overcoming it. A prophet might be five a five-talent trial person expected to increase in strength to ten for overcoming. The savior rewards those he increases with the same blessings no matter our talents.
He gives us what he knows we can deal with, and then blesses us for dealing with it. Also, it is not as if he leaves us to ourselves to deal with the trials, he comforts us throughout the experience to make sure we know that he loves us even though we may have to suffer a little to go through the trial.
Prophets are expected to suffer and overcome as all of us are expected to do. And no matter how big or small our trial of a talent is to others, they are significant to God because the power it takes to increase in faith to overcome those things are equally difficult for each individual.
We are not expected to lose everything as Job did, but we may be expected to lose a job, or a house, or a family member, but still come out righteous in the end. God will reward us no less than a prophet.

Nephis of Faith

That brings me to some prophets that had a great deal of trials by talent who increased in faith to honor God and receive a just reward. Nephi, Nephi and Nephi were great prophets. One Nephi lived above five centuries before the other. The other Nephi was the son of the second Nephi!
Number One Nephi of Faith

First Nephi of Faith

The first Nephi is one of my heroes because of the struggle he had to overcome within his immediate family in obeying the gospel and hearkening to the counsels and edicts of God. God commanded Lehi to take his family into the wilderness. Nephi was a member in this family.
Lehi explained that God commanded that he send his sons back to Jerusalem to get the genealogy of their fathers and the sacred scripture in the house of his cousin Laban. Two of his eldest sons of Lehi murmured about the commandment.
In 1 Nephi 3:7, Nephi responded to Lehi when asked to return to Jerusalem and retrieve the plates of brass “I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.”
Nephi is a symbol of righteousness who leads our thoughts back to Christ. We learn from him that God gives us no commands that He will not provide a way for us to complete. For example, God commanded my family to move to Arizona from Georgia.
We had no place of which to move, I had no job to support my family and a feeling in my breast to confirm the command. My wife and I prayed about it and made the journey. True to the promise of Nephi, God made a way for us to accomplish the move he commanded and he has sustained us every day since—because the trials do not stop.

Second Nephi of Trust

The second Nephi I want to mention was busy with missionary work—baptizing those who would follow Christ. IN Helaman chapter 7, Nephi is said to have went on a mission to the land northward to preach to his people there and was rejected utterly.
He then returned to his own house and lamented in prayer upon his tower over the wickedness of the people. From that tower he preached to the people and sought their repentance.
To drive home how wicked the people had become he was inspired to announce something tragic, something that put his own life in peril. Nephi, sorrowing at the evil of his day informed his listeners in Helaman 8:26-28,
Yea, even at this time ye are ripening, because of your murders and you fornication and wickedness, for everlasting destruction; yea, and except ye repent it will come unto you soon. Yea, behold it is now even at your doors; yea, go ye in unto the judgment-seat, and search; and behold, your judge is murdered, and he lieth in his blood; and he hath been murdered by his brother, who seeketh to sit in the judgment-seat. And behold, they both belong to your secret band, whose author is Gadianton and the evil one who seeketh to destroy the souls of men.
What a revelation, a real-time, play-by-play announcement of a tragic event. The great thing that happened in this case was not what Nephi said to the people but what occurred when the entire incident ended.
In Helaman 10:2, Nephi ponder what the Lord had shown him, as if he did not know those things beforehand, which he did not. Nephi teaches us that we should have faith to speak when we recognize the spirit has revealed something to us put forth to others—a wayward teen son or daughter, or families that we visit or home teach.
Because he was faithful, not only in that tower incident, but in his missionary work, in Helaman 10:6-8, the Lord declared in blessing “Behold, thou art Nephi, and I am God. Behold, I declare it unto thee in the presence of mine angels, that ye shall have power over this people, and shall smite the earth with famine, and with pestilence, and destruction, according to the wickedness of this people.
Behold, I give unto you power, that whatsoever ye shall seal on earth shall be sealed in heaven; and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven; and thus shall ye have power among this people. And thus, if ye shall say unto this temple it shall be rent in twain, it shall be done.”
If we have faith to act when moved by the spirit, the Lord will trust us as well as he did Nephi.

Third Nephi of Humility

The third Nephi was ordained as a prophet under the hand of his father Nephi and lived to witness the fulfillment of a prophecy revealed by the first Nephi that Jesus Christ should show himself to the Nephites after great destruction occurred.
Nephi in his own right was as great a missionary as was his father testifying to the wicked children of Lehi and exhorting them to turn to Christ and live prepared for Christ's coming.
The most important message from him is his humility. At the coming of Christ to the Temple at the city of Bountiful, though Nephi was the ordained prophet of God at his coming, he did not elevate himself above his brethren.
In 3 Nephi 11:18-21 it is written "And it came to pass that he spake unto Nephi (for Nephi was among the multitude) and he commanded him that he should come forth. And Nephi arose and went forth, and bowed himself before the Lord and did kiss his feet. And the Lord commanded him that he should arise. And he arose and stood before him. And the Lord said unto him: I give unto you power that ye shall baptize this people when I am again ascended into heaven."
What is significant about Nephi is that though he had the power given him already to act in the name of God, Jesus had to call him from among his fellow worshipers to renew his authority under the new covenant that Jesus established after resurrection.
Nephi did not presume to have privilege above any other person. The Lord made him the chief apostle among the children of Lehi, which was followed by almost 200 years of perfect harmony among the Christians on the Ancient American continent. To be powerful is good, as long as we do not exalt ourselves above our brethren.

Faith To Act

If we have the faith to open our mouths to those around us, the Lord will fill us with things to say. The men called Nephi shared a common trait—faith. All had faith to seek the Lord in prayer, faith to trust the Lord’s commands, faith to have studied God’s word and faith to act.
The blessings that each received are trust to perform the work of the Lord. Nephi went and retrieved the record from Laban at a high price. He had to take the life of a man because God commanded him to kill Laban. I have always cringed at that in the scriptures. Nephi showed us that sometimes, God requires use to do things that are hard—things that might shake us to our very moral core!
We will most likely not received a commandment to take another person’s life, but may feel prompted to change careers, serve senior’s mission, give up school for missionary work, serve in the military or sell property—something that we could only accomplish by living closely to the Lord so that we may have faith to act.
Nephi of Faith taught us is we do all we can to accomplish the designs of the Lord He will provide a way to accomplish it—even though the way might be different from what we expected. I am certain Nephi did not expect to kill Laban. I am sure of it in fact because of his reaction when the spirit promoted him in 1 Nephi 4:10.
He writes, “…I was constrained by the Spirit that I should kill Laban; but I said in my heart: Never at any time have I shed the blood of man. And I shrunk and would that I might not slay him.” Though Nephi did eventually obey the prompting he did not want to do it. He reluctantly did something because he had faith that God revealed it to him through the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
Nephi of Trust was given power over the elements for his obedience. God may not give us power or commandments to move mountains or stop the rain, but he will give us power to bring success to our stewardship. God may grant us wealth and riches because He knows that we will use them to bless our fellow beings. He may give us talent to lead nations or neighborhoods because we are willing to act when prompted.
Nephi of Humility demonstrated the humility of a true follower of Christ as he bowed at the feet of Jesus alongside other Christians without a place of honor. If we are obedient to the commands of God and show ourselves approved by walking in the path of Christ, He will reward us with responsibilities to further His work and prosper our creations and endeavors along the way.
